Securing Payment APIs and Webhooks in Mission-Critical Production Environments
Industry engineering practices to prevent replay attacks, guarantee idempotency, and safeguard user financial data.
When an application processes financial transactions or automated group provisioning, webhook security is non-negotiable. An attacker who replays an unprotected payment notification can trigger fraudulent access without paying a cent.
The primary line of defense is cryptographically verifying the HMAC-SHA256 signature on every inbound payload. Without a valid signature, the request must be dropped immediately before any business logic executes.
The second golden rule is strict idempotency: store the unique transaction identifier in a dedicated database table with a unique constraint. Even if the payment provider retries the notification three times, the provisioning routine executes exactly once.
